LAKESIDE PARK

Public BBQ

Lakeside Park reveals itself as one of those pleasantly unpretentious places where Australia gets the basics right, and occasionally, wonderfully wrong. The lake serves as the star attraction, hosting a reliable cast of ducks and the occasional black swan, all seemingly unbothered by the steady parade of dog walkers and children armed with bread crusts. The walking track loops the entire park, offering that particular Australian combination of gentle exercise and wildlife watching. The playground equipment appears robust enough to survive the school holiday onslaught, though one can't help but marvel at the council's decision to install basketball hoops at eight feet, presumably designed for a nation of slightly shorter people or very tall children. The undercover barbecue area provides blessed relief from the elements, though visitors should note the conspicuous absence of public toilets, a planning oversight that seems almost deliberately Australian in its practicality. The park manages to maintain its tranquil atmosphere despite being thoroughly family-friendly, creating that rare space where dogs, children, and contemplative adults can coexist peacefully around the water's edge.
